Donate your old books or buy some new ones! Either way, you’re supporting a great cause.
The Pink Ribbon Book Sale takes place October 13th through 15th in Windber. All proceeds from this annual fundraiser go to the Wendy Hollern Spencer Memorial Fund, supporting local institutions related to breast cancer.
Wendy Hollern Spencer battled cancer for 17 years. During that time, she became a tireless advocate for breast cancer research, prevention, and support services. Wendy started this book sale twelve years ago with her close friend, Carol Burnworth. After Wendy’s passing five years ago, Carol kept the book sale going in honor of her friend.
The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies has administered the Wendy Hollern-Spencer Memorial Fund since 2012. So far, it has raised more than $50,000. All of the money stays local. Most of it goes to the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center, to help patients from this area with needs surrounding treatment. That could be anything from funding for transportation to prescription medicine. Smaller portions also go to Windber Hospice and Somerset Oncology. The fund also sends a small amount every year to a no-kill animal shelter – a tribute to Wendy’s great love of animals.
You can support this cause two ways:
Go shopping at the Pink Ribbon Book Sale. Book prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. Volunteers have collected thousands of books, in lots of different categories. Each donation is cataloged by author and subject and books that look like they may be old or rare are researched to find out about potential values.
