Dick Cheney and Leon Panetta to Speak at The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown

Pair to Headline Inaugural Speaker Series
at the John P. Murtha Center for Public Service and National Competitiveness

The John P. Murtha Foundation is pleased to announce that two distinguished former high-ranking government leaders will participate in the inaugural speaker series event at the John P. Murtha Center for Public Service and National Competitiveness on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Campus on Veterans Day (observed), Monday, November 12.

While both men have held a variety of leadership roles in the highest levels of government, Dick Cheney and Leon Panetta have one title in common – Secretary of Defense. Mr. Cheney served in that role under President George H. W. Bush, and Mr. Panetta held the position in President Barack Obama’s administration.

Mr. Cheney was Vice President under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009 after representing Wyoming in the U.S. House of Representatives and working as White House Chief of Staff for President Gerald Ford.

Mr. Panetta was the CIA Director for the Obama administration, and White House Chief of Staff and Director of the Office of Management and Budget for President Bill Clinton. Before his White House roles, Mr. Panetta represented California’s 16th then 17th district in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Vice President Cheney and Secretary Panetta will share their unique perspectives on today’s national defense and military. Since they served on opposite sides of the political aisle, they will provide valuable insight into the role of bipartisan leadership, as well as personal experience working with the late Congressman John P. Murtha.

Mrs. Joyce Murtha and former U.S. Ambassador to India and Johnstown native Mr. Richard Verma are also participating in the event. Ambassador Verma will moderate the VIP Session.

The John P. Murtha Center for Public Service and National Competitiveness, located on the Pitt-Johnstown campus, opened in 2017 to honor John P. Murtha’s 36 years representing Pennsylvania’s 12 District in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Center is used to promote understanding and inquiry into key issues; advance public discourse or debate on policies, encourage public service; and support related academic experiences. In addition to meeting spaces, the Center includes an exhibit containing some of the influential and accomplished lawmaker’s congressional and personal documents and artifacts. Mr. Murtha is the longest-serving member of Congress in Pennsylvania history, most notably chairing the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Pitt-Johnstown in 1961.
