SUMMARY:Christopher "Bub" Ream 5k
DESCRIPTION:The Christopher ‘Bub” Ream non-competitive 5K walk will take place Saturday\, May 13th\, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Somerset School Athletic Field Parking lot on South Franklin Avenue. Walkers are welcome to bring their dogs to join in the festivities. \nProceeds from the event will go toward the Christopher “Bub” Ream Memorial Scholarship\, which was established by Christopher’s family to honor his life. \nChristopher was 20-years old when he suddenly passed away in 2011. The Somerset Borough native was active in his high school\, enjoyed football\, and loved to write. He was known as the “gentle giant\,” according to his mom. \nThe fund created in his name provides two annual scholarships for Somerset Area High School senior football players and also provides for other areas of community support. \nThis is the second year in a row organizers have held the 5k\, which took the place of a charity golf tournament. Christopher’s mom\, Pam Ream\, says\, “Doing a benefit every year helps us. It’s a way for us to remember Christopher and share his passion for life with others. Never take anything for granted. I’m glad I was always able to tell Christopher I loved him every day.” \nClick here for a registration form. You can donate directly to the scholarship here. \nFor questions about the event\, contact Pam Ream at 814-279-1359 or reamersmom@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Brad Wess Memorial Hockey Game
DESCRIPTION:Friends\, family\, students\, and hockey lovers come together on March 18th this year to honor the life and memory of Bradley Wess\, with the Brad Wess Memorial Hockey Scholarship Showcase. The memorial hockey game will be played at the Cambria County War Memorial from 3-6pm\, prior to that night’s Tomahawks game. \nBrad died in a car wreck ten years ago. The 16-year-old Forest Hills High School student was an avid hockey player\, who planned to go on to college to study engineering. His family created the Brad Wess Scholarship Fund with the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies to celebrate Brad’s life and establish his legacy. \nThe memorial hockey game is an annual fundraiser for the scholarship\, which is awarded to two-to-three students every year. Scholarship winners are announced at the game. \nSeniors form 13 schools are invited to play this year. Organizers have had such an overwhelming response\, they plan to add an extra quarter onto the game to accommodate the large number of players. \nTickets are $5 at the door. The Johnstown Tomahawks have donated the rink time\, so all proceeds go into the scholarship fund. \nWhat: Brad Wess Memorial Hockey Scholarship Showcase\nWhen: Saturday\, March 18th\, 3-6pm\nWhere: Cambria County War Memorial\nCost: $5 at the door \n

SUMMARY:Santa Fund Senior Soccer Classic
DESCRIPTION:For the 6th year in a row\, the Greater Johnstown School District is hosting the Cambria-Somerset Senior All-Star Soccer Classic\, benefitting the Santa Fund. \nSince it was created 8 years ago\, the Santa Fund has distributed more than $200\,000 in toys to children throughout our region. This effort has many partners: Girl Scouts\, the Alternative Community Resource Program’s Family Center\, AmeriCorps\, Boscov’s\, WRCO Radio\, the United Way of the Laurel Highlands\, The Tribune-Democrat\, and the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. \nWhat the group has done has been outstanding—over 15\,000 Christmas gifts have gone to children who otherwise may have had none. \nThe Greater Johnstown School District has offered once again to organize a Cambria-Somerset Senior All-Star Soccer Classic to benefit the Santa Fund. \nOn Saturday\, November 19\, 2016 at Trojan Stadium\, a doubleheader will be held featuring all-star senior girls and then senior boys teams. The girls’ game will start at 1:15 with boys’ game immediately afterwards. \nThe Santa Fund partners are seeking sponsorships for this event at the following levels: \n\n$1\,000 to become a Santa’s Reindeer\n$500 to become a Santa’s Elf\n$250 to become a Santa’s Helper\n\nYour sponsorship will be featured in The Tribune-Democrat promotions\, WCRO Radio\, over the PA system\, and in the Roster Guide at Trojan Stadium. For commitments of $500 and above\, your logo or name will appear on the players’ game shirts. Your support will help to present the game and all net revenue\, every penny\, will go directly for more toys for kids in our area. \nYou can also become a Santa Booster for a $25 donation. Boosters will be listed in the Roster Guide to be distributed on game day and in The Tribune-Democrat. \nThis is a great cause and a great testament to our community. Please recognize the high school athletes and support the Santa Fund. If you’re interested in being a sponsor or in becoming a Santa Booster\, please be in touch with Marisa Nelson at the CFA. Her info: mnelson@cfalleghenies.org\, or 814-596-7741\, ext.116 \nThe deadline is Monday\, November 7\, 2016. \nWe welcome all contributions. You can donate anytime online.
