SUMMARY:Brad Wess Memorial Hockey Game
DESCRIPTION:Friends\, family\, students\, and hockey lovers come together on March 18th this year to honor the life and memory of Bradley Wess\, with the Brad Wess Memorial Hockey Scholarship Showcase. The memorial hockey game will be played at 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial from 3-6pm\, prior to that night’s Tomahawks game. \nBradley Wess was a fun-loving\, hockey-loving junior at Forest Hills High School in the fall of 2007 when a tragic auto accident claimed his life. The kind and giving 16-year-old had chosen to be an organ donor.  As a way to celebrate Brad’s life\, friends\, family\, & community members from several area schools established the Brad Wess Memorial Scholastic Showcase\, with the help of the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies. \nEach winter\, seniors from local teams are invited to participate in a game of fun & camaraderie. The annual hockey game is a fundraiser for the Brad Wess Memorial Scholarship\, which is awarded to two-to-three students every year. The CBT@ Creator Square is a series of monthly lectures featuring a special artist guest speaker.  This month’s lecture will include entertainment by local acoustic musician\, along with wine\, beer\, and refreshments. KIM FOX\, an artist in the medium of tins and salvaged wood\, as well as art teacher\, designer and illustrator\, will be the fourth speaker in the Creator Square\, Craft Business Thursday Speaker Series. \nThe goals of this series for Craft Business Thursdays @ Creator Square are to: update the community on Creator Square’s progress in anticipation of the building’s renovation and program rollout in 2018-19; discuss concepts like ‘craft business\,’ ‘makers movement\,’ and entrepreneurialism; feature a talented and accomplished craft business person / maker during each evening’s lecture / workshop. \nKIM FOX: \nKim Fox was born in New Wilmington\, PA and raised in Stahlstown\, PA\, a rural area east of Pittsburgh. She currently resides in Mt. Lebanon\, PA\, a “streetcar suburb” of Pittsburgh. She earned her BFA in Printmaking from the College of Charleston in Charleston\, SC\, in 1994.  Her childhood in rural Western Pennsylvania informs her aesthetic\, subject matter and choice of materials. She has been making art and showing her work for sixteen years – beginning with more traditional painting and collage when she lived in Florida. After moving back to Pennsylvania and reclaiming her roots\, she started to explore the regional arts and crafts with a more rural bent. Six years ago she began working with vintage tins and salvaged wood and patchworking the tin in a way that felt like quilting. Currently\, she is researching traditional quilting and the stories behind the patterns. Her tin quilts have been shown in galleries in Pittsburgh\, Providence\, RI\, and Brooklyn\, NY. In addition to making her tin quilts\, Fox is an itinerant art teacher in regional schools and also is a designer and illustrator. When she’s not making or teaching she’s with her husband and son\, their three dogs\, a cat\, five chickens\, and a milk snake. Probably around a fire.

In this role\, Bill guides the development of regional and organizational messaging strategy and supervises Investor Relations activities\, including membership development and programming\, as well as fundraising. \nAn experienced broadcast journalist\, Bill has told the story of the transformation of the economy in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania for more than 30-years. He serves as host and producer of “Our Region’s Business\,” a weekly business public affairs program on WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh\, PA\, the Pittsburgh Cable News Channel (PCNC)\, and YouTube. \nAs President of The Pittsburgh G-20 Partnership in 2009\, Bill helped to organize the public/private partnership of organizations from across southwestern Pennsylvania that came together to welcome the world for the Pittsburgh Summit. As Executive Director of Pittsburgh 250\, the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the naming of Pittsburgh in 2008\, Bill supervised a multi-year\, 14-county initiative. \nBill came to work in southwestern Pennsylvania in 1982 as a reporter for KDKA-TV. He served as the station’s Money Editor for 13 years and has written about personal finance for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and KDKA-AM. \nBill serves on the boards of Leadership Pittsburgh\, Inc. and Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area\, and on the Pittsburgh advisory board of the Science and Engineering Ambassadors\, a program of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. \nBill is a graduate of Northwestern University (B.S. DESCRIPTION:Bring the whole family to see The Sound of Music on the big screen\, Wednesday\, January 17th at 6pm \nThis is the next installment in the “Classic Movies in Johnstown” series\, sponsored by the CFA’s Gella Family Fund. \nThis 1965 American musical film was produced and directed by Robert Wise\, and starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer\, with Richard Haydn and Eleanor Parker. The film is an adaptation of the 1959 stage musical of the same name\, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The film’s screenplay was written by Ernest Lehman\, adapted from the stage musical’s book by Lindsay and Crouse. Based on the memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp\, the film is about a young Austrian woman studying to become a nun in Salzburg in 1938 who is sent to the villa of a retired naval officer and widower to be governess to his seven children.  After bringing and teaching love and music into the lives of the family through kindness and patience\, she marries the officer and together with the children they find a way to survive the loss of their homeland through courage and faith. \nThe Sound of Music received five Academy Awards\, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also received two Golden Globe Awards\, for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress\, the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement\, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Written American Musical. In 1998\, the American Film Institute (AFI) listed The Sound of Music as the fifty-fifth greatest American movie of all time\, and the fourth greatest movie musical. Now it’s time to get together and do it again! \nBand Instructor Suzette Gardenhour and Choral Instructor Mari Grace put together this first-ever Conemaugh Township Music Alumni Concert and fundraiser for the Music Makes us Stronger Fund. The fund supports Conemaugh Township students\, music alumni\, music alumni’s children\, or the members of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s District 6 (Somerset\, Cambria\, Blair and Bedford counties) who experience cancer. \nSuzette created the fund after her own battle with cancer\, which started in October 2106. She says it was her turn to make a difference in her community because “I personally experienced the love\, kindness\, and thoughtfulness of our Conemaugh township Community. Their support was an uplifting force in helping me through my journey.” \nSuzette established the Music Makes us Stronger Fund with money that had generously been collected for her by the cast and crew of the school’s 2017 musical “Annie Get your Gun.” \nThis Music Reunion and Fundraiser is intended to be an annual event\, providing ongoing support to the fund. The Conemaugh Township Music Department will designate an individual or family in need of assistance each year. \nThe Inaugural Concert takes place November 22 at the high school with a music department reunion performance\, featuring alumni from the marching band and colorguard\, musicals\, concert band\, jazz band and concert choir. In addition to the concert\, organizers will offer a silent auction\, raffles\, and other opportunities to make donations. \nAlumni from 1938 through 2017 are expected to attend. DESCRIPTION:The Tartan Trio – Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Audition Winners \nFormed in 2016\, the Tartan Trio is composed of Carnegie Mellon School of Music undergraduate student flutist Aydan Hensley\, violist Brandon Foster\, and harpist Mia Venezia. The group has performed publicly in several different venues\, varying from the halls of Carnegie Mellon School of Music’s Kresge Theater to the historic parks of Philadelphia. DESCRIPTION:Raise money to spread holiday cheer to Somerset’s families in need. \nEvery year\, the S.O.S. Secret Santa of Somerset and Surrounding Areas provides hundreds of holiday fruit baskets to the elderly\, disabled persons\, hospice patients\, shut-ins\, and homeless people. Organizers also purchase and assemble holiday packaged for about 350 children\, with clothes\, hats\, gloves\, books\, a toy\, and candy. \nS.O.S delivers smiles year round\, to families and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet.  This basket party is their biggest fundraiser of the year\, drawing between 400 and 500 people. It’s a party you don’t want to miss\, supporting a cause you can feel great about! \n$10 admission includes entry\, door prize\, and 25 tickets. Additional chances available for purchase. Bring toys\, blankets\, or other items to donate\, and be entered in a special drawing. \nCan’t make it to the basket party?
