DESCRIPTION:The 8th Annual Santa Fund Soccer Classic\nThe Greater Johnstown School District has offered again to host a Cambria-Somerset All-Star Soccer Classic to benefit the Tribune-Democrat Santa Fund. \nOver the past nine years\, the Tribune Democrat Santa Fund has distributed nearly $250\,000 in toys to area children.  Various groups volunteered to make this happen—the many people from throughout the region who contributed\, the Girl Scouts\, the Alternative Community Resource Program’s Family Center\, AmeriCorps\, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies\, the United Way of the Laurel Highlands\, Boscov’s\, WCRO Radio\, and The Tribune-Democrat. \nWhat the group has done has been outstanding—tens of thousands of Christmas gifts have gone to children who otherwise may have had none. \nNow another wonderful gesture has been made that will help the Santa Fund serve even more children:  The Greater Johnstown School District has offered to organize a Cambria-Somerset All-Star Soccer Classic to benefit the Santa Fund.  \nOn Saturday\, November 17\, 2018 at Trojan Stadium\, a doubleheader will be held featuring all-star senior girls’ and then senior boys’ teams. The girls’ game will start at 1:00 with the boys’ game immediately following. \nThe Santa Fund partners are seeking sponsorships for this event at the following levels: \n\n$1\,000 to become a Santa’s Reindeer\n$500 to become a Santa’s Elf\n$250 to become a Santa’s Helper\n\nYour sponsorship will be featured in The Tribune-Democrat promotional ads and in the Roster Guide at Trojan Stadium.  For commitments of $500 and above\, your logo or name will appear on the players’ game shirts.  Your support will help to present the game and all net revenue\, every penny\, will go directly for more toys for kids in our area. \nThis is a great cause and a great testament to our community.  Please recognize the high school athletes and support the Santa Fund. DESCRIPTION:The Art of Puppetry in the Community \nGallery on Gazebo is offering a FREE workshop on the Art of Puppetry. Have you ever dreamed of being a puppeteer or joining a group of community-spirited performers? Here is a chance to develop your skills as a puppeteer and potentially put them to use as a performer in a brand new puppetry troupe. \nWHEN: Sunday\, October 14\, from noon-5pm\nWHERE: Gallery on Gazebo\n140 Gazebo Place\nJohnstown PA. 15901 \nThe Art of Puppetry in the Community \nParticipants in this full day workshop will begin by examining a collection from the Patchwork Puppet Theatre that were recently donated  by the estate of Margaret S. Mayer.   The collection includes hand-made puppets in many different styles as well as original scripts designed to bring them to life. We will unpack the collection and\, through a process of discovery\, get to know the puppets and the stories they tell. \nNext\, participants will go through a series of activities designed to develop skills as a puppeteer; focus\, breath\, voice and movement will be covered. How do these skills come into play in performances with puppets? How do you connect with your puppet and the audience through these techniques? After much practice\, we will apply these skills to bring the stories of these puppets to life as we act out the scripts from this amazing collection. \nThe workshop will conclude with a nuts and bolts session on how to make and manage a puppet theater company including ways to find opportunities\, market your work\, generate income and officially form a Company if desired. The end goal of this workshop is to collect a small group of inspired individuals around this puppet legacy and give them the training and confidence to bring them back to life. \nThis workshop is supported by a grant from PA Citizens for the Arts. \nPuppet maker Cheryl Capezzuti with some of her puppets in her studio.\nAbout Cheryl Capezzuti\, our presenter:\nCheryl Capezzuti has been working as a professional puppetmaker for more than 20 years. She is best known as the master puppetmaker and creative director for the First Night Pittsburgh Parade which is an artist-made\, people-powered celebration of the new year that features over 300 giant puppets dancing in the street. She is an award-winner educator\, recipient of more than 30 Artist-in-Residence grants from the PA Council on the Arts\, a founding member of the Puppetry Guild of Pittsburgh and faculty member at Falk Lab School at the University of Pittsburgh. She conducts puppetry workshops all over Pittsburgh and is the go-to puppeteer for theater companies in Pittsburgh that want to bring puppets to life in their theatrical work. Since the founding of Hyatt’s Angels\, the funeral expenses of 30 children have been funded. Director\, Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority\, 814.472.2110\, or Brad Clemenson\, CCCRA Board member\, 814.659.3465 \nPublic Meeting Set for Bicycle-Pedestrian Plan\nA second public meeting to gather community feedback on suggested bicycle and walking routes through the city and some adjacent areas will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday\, July 17 at Bottle Works Arts on Third Avenue in Johnstown. \nThe Johnstown Urban Connectivity Plan is being developed by Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority to identify the best options for bringing the September 11th National Memorial Trail and the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal Greenway through Johnstown.  These routes intersect in the downtown.  They will provide safe and attractive ways for local residents to walk and bicycle between neighborhoods and out into wooded areas such as the existing Path of the Flood and Jim Mayer trails. \nAbout 40 people came to the first public meet held May 9 to offer suggestions for walking and bicycling routes.  In the upcoming meeting\, many suggestions from the first meeting along with some other options will be shown on maps and people will be able to provide feedback on which options they think would work best. \nThe September 11th National Memorial Trail connects the former World Trade Center site in New York City to the Pentagon near Washington\, DC\, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County.  Between Flight 93 and New York\, it will come through Johnstown\, providing a great opportunity to attract visitors who will stay overnight and spend money in the community. \nThe Main Line Canal Greenway is being developed to connect Pittsburgh and Harrisburg\, and part of the Greenway from Johnstown through Hollidaysburg will use the same route.  The Urban Connectivity Plan will use existing trails\, including the Path of the Flood Trail\, Jim Mayer Riverwalk Trail and the Cambria Iron Trail that connects the downtown to Cambria City.  The Main Line Greenway will go through Johnstown’s West End and Conemaugh Gap. \nThe authority is developing the plan with grants from the state Department of Community and Economic Development and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. It hired Laird Recreation and Land Planning of Roaring Spring as the prime consultant on the plan\, which will also address streetscapes\, identify ways to calm traffic and reduce conflicts with commercial and industrial traffic to make these nationally significant trails attractive\, safe and functional. \nIn addition to providing a major economic boost through tourism\, these trail connections will make the city a far better place to walk and bicycle\, providing alternative means of transportation and encouraging residents to adopt active lifestyles that are more healthy lifestyles. The recommended in-town routes are taking into consideration their mutually beneficial impact with the economic development of both new and historic structures. Measures are being recommended to make these selected streets very pedestrian and bicycle friendly\, and “continuously interesting.” \nThese trails will also connect local transportation resources – the mass-transit bus terminal\, historic Amtrak passenger-rail station\, and historic Inclined Plane.  In addition\, they’ll link to parks\, open space\, four National Historic Districts\, cultural\, heritage and other community assets that also support tourism.  Johnstown’s trail network will connect three National Parks within a 30-mile radius — Flight 93 National Memorial\, Johnstown Flood National Memorial and the Allegheny-Portage Railroad National Historic Site\, which includes Staple Bend Tunnel\, America’s oldest railroad tunnel\, through which the Path of the Flood and Main Line trails pass. \nThis planning project will also look at the feasibility of connecting the Path of the Flood at Mineral Point with the Ghost Town Trail in Nanty Glo. \nIn addition to serving as the prime contractor on the Johnstown Urban Connectivity Plan\, Laird Recreation is a subcontractor to Campbell-Thomas & Co.\, a Philadelphia planning and architecture firm\, currently investigating the best and most feasible options to connect Flight 93 Memorial to Johnstown.  Other subcontractors of Laird Recreation are FisherWorks Consulting of Somerset and CDI-Kimball Engineering of Ebensburg. \nSaveSave \nSaveSave \nSaveSave \nSaveSave \nSaveSave

Every year since 2005\, we have had the pleasure to award two scholarships to a deserving female and male athlete during the WAHS Honors Night Ceremony. These student athletes received a $1\,000.00 award to assist in their continuing education endeavors. Although we depend on the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies to administer our scholarship fund\, our golf outing has been designated as the main source for continued funding for the scholarships\, as well as supporting the athletic program needs. Such support includes funding for individual or team sports camps\, summer leagues and other specialized instruction opportunities for both teams and individual athletes. \nHelp us make this our best year yet!
